What is the latest date( in the fall) I could plant tomatoes in Phoenix Az?

I recently moved from the Northeast. I understand there are two planting seasons for tomatoes in Phoenix. Spring and Fall. I planted tomatoes in October. Are they going to make it?

  1. Probably. I planted mine in Sept. and they are doing great. There were a couple dozen fruits last time I looked. Just keep an eye on the night time temp and if it drops into the 30's cover them up with an old sheet at night.
  2. Im not exactly sure what it is like in Phoenix... I farm in southern California. I would guess that it gets rather chilly at night during the dead of winter. Tomatoes generally take about 80 days to harvest after planting, but that is a warm season number. I would recommend not planting 100 days before when you expect a freeze. This may only provide one harvest. If your fruit is green, I would harvest it at the first hint of color, then leave it on your counter near some bananas and apples and it will continue to ripen. Even if they are a little green, they will be 10 times better than any store bought 'maters!
  3. It is according to which zone you live in. Go to this link and scroll waaaay down the screen for growing information and plants: http://cals.arizona.edu/gardening/climate/printzone.html
