1. the planet orbiting pulls away from the object and the gravity pulls it in...sorta like a ball on a string being twirled around
2. Gravity pulls the Earth in towards the Sun. However, since Inertia makes the earth keep on orbiting, it pulls it outwards. The two forces cancel each other out, hence the orbiting.
