Assignment on cross cultural management? Assignment on cross-cultural management Hi, I'm not sure I posted this in the right directory...but I couldn't find any business threads, so I posted this here. I am a university student learning a module based on cross cultural mangement. I have to ‘Compare and contrast two differing cultures (one being the UK) the other a national culture of your choice from the ones studied, described and mapped by Hofstede.’ I have chosen to do India and the UK... The thing is, I can't think of an argument which I could put into my essay. What arguement should I put, and how should I structure this assignment.. I have to talk about hofstede, decision making implications... Would really appreciate your help!

Study abroad in Seoul, South Korea or Sao Paulo, Brazil? I am a Business (Supply Chain Management) major at Arizona State University and am looking to stud abroad for 6 weeks this summer. The two programs I am looking into are: Seoul, South Korea: Korea University's International Summer Campus (ISC) serves as an international hub for academic dialogue during summer - For Korean students, it is a gateway to experience quality education that prepares them for global leadership. For International students, it is an opportunity to learn about Korea and Korean culture, politics, economy and history. ISC opens the door to globalization and increases mutual understanding among people with diverse backgrounds. ISC provides an opportunity to spend six weeks in one of Asia's most dynamic cities, while taking courses alongside Koreans and other international students (taught in English) that will fit directly into an ASU degree. Sao Paulo, Brazil: This program will focus on doing business in Brazil with a special emphasis on building cross-cultural relationships in the Brazilian context. Students will have several lectures in English from the Brazilian faculty members of IBMEC and lectures from Dr. Jane Carey of ASU. There will be visits to Brazilian companies including Unibanco and a model farm and Brazilian cultural venues in Sao Paulo. There is also an outing to Barro do Sahy which is a resort area near Sao Paulo
can someone summarize this article for me like now? NEW YORK – TO BE RELEVANT, ART must respond to the choices, changes and challenges of these fluid, turbulent times and help create the conditions necessary to transform society and deal with consequences, where the burning issues of the day become the overriding factor in the pursuit of a meaningful popular culture. All artists are active participants in these current cross cultural dynamics and cannot afford to be left out in the cold or live the solitary, isolated existence under the pretentious mask of artistic indifference. To be catalysts for change, artists need to constantly question their own motives, unfair policies affecting creative freedom and one's role in a society; to continuously evolve and not waste valuable time worrying about their reputation after they’re dead. Much as we respect the choices most artists make for themselves, there’s an underlying need for them to document their own times - the sweeping political changes happening around us; to grapple with the issues as they come and try to create art that amplify and project opportunities for change to a larger audience. The enormous impact of Western popular culture on diverse communities worldwide has reached a point where we cannot afford to allow a handful of privileged few to define its form and content without the active participation of socially committed members of the international Arts community. It’s sad to note that the onslaught of American popular culture has marginalized, if not totally wiped out, indigenous cultures in many parts of the world. Poor, underdeveloped countries with rich cultural heritage have been 'touched' by the magic wand of Hollywood and are fighting back its negative impact on their traditional way of life. Cultural amnesia- the loss of traditional values, oral history and indigenous art forms, have now become more prevalent than in the past as more and more ethnic communities are quick to adapt what they see on the screen as 'progress' and accept it to be far better than what they have had for centuries. I hope the scheduled conference on social theory, on politics and the arts would address these concerns to be able to institute necessary changes to safeguard the integrity of indigenous communities. The upcoming 33rd Conference on Social Theory, Politics and the Arts is a continuing dialogue by participants drawn not only from artists in the visual, performing, written and multi media arts but also from a broad range of disciplines that include sociology, political science, management, economics, law, urban planning and policy studies. Hosted by The New York foundation for the Arts, The Arts Council of Manhattan, the NYU Roberts Wagner Graduate School of Public Service and the Research Center for Leadership in Action, this year's conference aims "to explore new trends, practices and public policy issues affecting and shaping the arts around the world." Last March, I had the privilege of taking part in an art exhibition at a Chelsea gallery in NYC and was glad to see quite a number of artworks that explored the political realities of American life, skillfully calculated to question and disturb viewers from their private complacency. There is no question that the New York art scene has been regarded as the crystal ball of new things to come; unfortunately, the current crop of art pieces had nothing much to say and even failed miserably to amuse. Despite living in the shadows of 9/11, political art in NYC is still groping in the dark ages, seemingly destined to be graffiti outside gallery walls. Quite a number of NY-based artists I’ve met, whose works revolve around the current political debates, lament that most art galleries won't dare touch 'political art' with the proverbial ten feet pole. Art galleries are primarily business driven and understandably more concerned with their return of investments. Unfortunately some even expound that myth that artists should stay away and be apolitical, to paint only decorative, 'saleable' pieces that would go well in upscale condo units. What gets hanged or not hanged in galleries have a great impact on popular culture and most galleries would cringe at anything resembling 'breaking news' from war zones. But for most artists to continue doing what they’re good at, they have to live on their art. But since the market for political art, if one has to survive on it, is not much, this could initially discourage some artists from investing much of their creative time on it. Hopefully gallery owners would realize that political art has its niche in our lives. In contrast is the swelling tide of books on current political debates. I can't help but envy those writers and publishing houses that dare focus their efforts and resources to bring about the truth regardless of consequences. Whistleblowers, anti-war groups, civil disobedience advocates and environmental activist are all having a field day. These writers have successfully rammed their political views

Let me know ur opinion - Managerial Skills Learnt from Classroom Can Never Match Those Learnt from Experience? For •Within the confines of a class room, a student can gain knowledge by either reading through book(s)/reference material(s) and/or solve case studies. This is only bookish knowledge that cannot be regarded as experience. Also such theory is only retained for a short duration. It is transient by nature. It doesn’t create an imprint on his mind and thus doesn’t help him wade through the future endeavours. •Textbooks/reference materials/case studies provide a narrow scope for learning. They do not include all the real-life situations that organizations in today’s world face. Merely a few months curriculum cannot match the rigours faced in the real world! •Case Studies only arm the student with theoretical angles to solving the situation(s) under the scanner but when such a situation actually arises in the corporate scenario; it tests the student’s presence of mind, his managerial traits and magnitude of effectiveness. •A student learns to refrain from mixing his emotions while taking tough business decisions while on-the-job. This human aspect that is imbibed only through experience can never be taught in a class room. Against •Reference material(s)/case studies provide generic aspects of handling business situations which enable a management student to implement the possible steps listed out in them. 75% of the business situations can be handled through a refined knowledge/base of theory. •Management Institutes use a host of techniques to empower their students to get a feel of business situations. Such techniques include – Ice Breakers, Leadership/Skill/Communication/Team-Building games, Strategic Planners, Role Reversal, Doubling, Tag Teams, Mirroring, Monodrama, Shifting Physical Positions, Structured Role Playing, Built-in-tension, Shadowing, Outward-bound training, Lateral Thinking, Morphological Analysis, Gordon Technique, Attribute Listening and Cross-Cultural Training. Conclusion Although on-the-job training prepares an individual to handle real-life situations much better than what he could by just solving case studies, theoretical know-how grooms an individual to be more articulate in his approach and adds to his all-round personality. It gives him an academic certification which is much valued in today’s corporate scenario.
Is Berlitz a quality language school that you would be proud of working for? I am a recent college graduate with a passion for foreign languages and cross cultural communication and thus would love to work for a company where I could pursue these interests. When looking online I have come across a few management positions at some Berlitz language centers and wonder if working there would match my interests. However, some have described Berlitz as the "McDonald's" or the "get rich quick scheme" of language learning. Is this at all true? An important part of working there would be to promote and sell the classes and services offered by Berlitz but I would feel like a scam artist if I were to sell a product or service I did not really believe in. What can you tell me about this well-known chain of language schools? Are they a well-regarded institution known for offering quality instruction or are they just a good marketing scheme as some claim?

Is it worth it to study abroad after college graduation even if it delays getting your first "real" job? I recently graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Management: Global Business and am interested in pursuing an internationally-oriented career. During my undergraduate career I spent a semester abroad in Mexico and am now fairly conversant (albeit not completely fluent) in Spanish. What is the best next step to take in my career? Should I pursue a permanent job immediately to gain real work experience? Or should I save up money from my summer job to be able to go abroad for a month and get more int'l experience first while I still can and then settle into a more formal position after that? On the one hand this is the last call to do something I really enjoy doing and also to build by repertoire of cross-cultural experiences and improve my language skills by immersion. On the other hand, ultimately future employers look for real work experience as much or more than they do for "soft skills" and may even think I lack ambition if I don't get right into a job. Any thought?
What jobs would be good for someone with an international business degree who does not enjoy sales? I chose to major in Management with an emphasis in Global Business because it was more or less a compromise between my personal interests and my sense of realism: I knew that my personal interests made language study and cross cultural interaction what I would be passionate about, but I was pragmatic enough to know that I had to get a degree that would be marketable enough to earn me a paycheck. I enjoy interacting with people but do not enjoy attempting to sell to them--I am more diplomatic than I am persuasive. My personality also enjoys planning, organizing, and analyzing. Are there any international--or potentially international--careers that would correspond to these characteristics? I am interested to hear what you think....
